Other Information: My Poetry Assemblies (rich with delightful illustrations from my superbly-reviewed books) are renowned for being inspirational, motivational, fun, funny, and filled with solid academics. I want kids to leave the assemblies saying, "I want to be a writer when I grow up!" There are three versions of this assembly, for lower elementary, upper elementary, and MS/HS.
My Civil Rights Assembly (filled with over a hundred historical photos) is gripping. It is based upon the fact that my father was Dr. Martin Luther King's chief attorney, as described in my historical novel, A Tugging String (Dutton). The assembly tells the story of American civil rights by focusing on the Selma-Montgomery Voting Rights march and the pivotal role my father played. The assembly emphasizes the need for all of us to be responsible citizens and speak loud for fairness, justice, and decency. I have two versions of this assembly, one oriented to older students, and another simplified for younger ones.

- WRITING WORKSHOPS: Intensive, follow-up writing workshops for one or several classes at a time (all grades).
